CLICK IT OR TICKET
Edina, Minn., Oct. 1, 2009 --
Edina Police Department officers will participate in the statewide Click It or
Ticket seat belt campaign October 9–22, 2009 — the first full-scale seat
belt enforcement effort since Minnesota’s primary seat belt law became effective
June 9.
This law requires all people in a vehicle — including the back seat — to
be buckled up or seated in the correct child restraint. Officers can now
stop and ticket motorists solely for seat belt violations, including unbelted
passengers. The fine for a seat belt citation in Hennepin County is
$103.
In Hennepin County in 2006 - 2008, 90 motorists were killed —33 of whom were not
belted — and another 134 unbelted motorists were seriously injured. “I hope
these deaths and injuries remind everyone that traffic deaths due to seat belt
non-use are preventable,” says Edina Sgt. Phil Larsen. “Minnesota’s seat belt
law and Click It or Ticket are intended to boost seat belt compliance to prevent
these needless tragedies.”
